Abstract
Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in listening comprehension; however, preliminary observation showed that some students still had difficulty recognizing spoken vocabulary and identifying main ideas and specific information in spoken texts. This research aimed to determine the correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension among students of class XI.10 at SMA Negeri 1 Tembilahan Hulu. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 36 students selected through purposive sampling because they had received advanced English instruction and had relevant experience in vocabulary and listening comprehension activities. Data were collected through two tests, each consisting of 15 multiple-choice items. The instruments were validated through expert judgment and obtained Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients of 0.720 and 0.708. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, and Pearson Product Moment correlation with SPSS version 27. The results showed mean scores of 64.07 for vocabulary mastery and 62.04 for listening comprehension; both variables were normally distributed. The correlation analysis yielded r = 0.692 with p < 0.001; therefore, H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. In conclusion, there was a strong, positive, and statistically significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension among students of class XI.10, although the correlational design does not establish causality.
