Abstract
Agricultural activities through intensification and the use of chemical inputs have increased global food production. However, this has had negative impacts on the environment, social conflict, and farmers' vulnerability to input prices. A farming system that balances production, the environment, and social issues is needed. This study aims to identify local knowledge and institutions in sago plantation management and formulate a model for strengthening farmers' capacity in sago waste management based on this local knowledge and institutions. The study was conducted in Indragiri Hilir Regency from November 2023 to January 2024. Data collection was carried out through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews. Informants in this study consisted of farmers, community leaders, sago cutters, traders, factory owners, agricultural extension workers, and the Indragiri Hilir Regency Plantation Office. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively using the Miles and Hubberman approach, including problem identification, data collection, initial coding, determining themes, and presenting data. Farmers' local knowledge in sago management is obtained through experience in environmentally friendly cultivation and harvesting practices. Local institutions include sago farmer associations and the existence of informal conflict resolution. Local knowledge is crucial for enhancing farmers' capacity as a basis for knowledge and innovation, while local institutions foster collaboration and active farmer participation. The combination of these two local values improves farmers' capacity for integrated sago management between plantations and mills, maximizing waste management.
