Abstract

Grammar plays an important role in English learning because it enables students to produce accurate and meaningful sentences. One grammatical form commonly used in descriptive texts is the simple present tense, particularly for expressing general facts and characteristics. However, students may encounter difficulties in applying appropriate verb forms, especially the use of base verbs (V1) and verbs with -s/-es/-ies for third-person singular subjects. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the understanding of Grade X students at SMK Negeri 1 Tembilahan in using simple present tense verbs in descriptive texts. This study employed a descriptive quantitative design. The population consisted of 436 Grade X students, with 44 students selected through random sampling. The instrument was a written completion test comprising 17 valid items, with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.728, indicating acceptable reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through scores, percentages, and five categories of students’ understanding. The findings showed that 21 students (47.73%) were categorized as Very High, 9 students (20.45%) as High, 12 students (27.27%) as Moderate, and 2 students (4.55%) as Low, while none were categorized as Very Low. Regarding the indicators, Accuracy in Using Base Verb Forms (V1) reached 77.05%, while Accuracy in Using Verbs with -s/-es/-ies for Third Person Singular Subjects reached 71.75%; both were categorized as High. Overall, the students’ understanding was categorized as Very High. The findings also indicated that students demonstrated better understanding of base verb forms than third-person singular verb forms with -s/-es/-ies
