Abstract
Speaking is an essential skill in English language learning because it enables students to express their ideas, feelings, and information orally. However, some students still experience anxiety when speaking English, such as nervousness, fear of making mistakes, lack of self-confidence, and concern about receiving negative evaluations from others. These conditions may hinder students’ participation and ability to communicate effectively in English. This research aimed to determine the level of English speaking anxiety among tenth-grade students at SMAN 2 Tembilahan in the academic year 2025/2026. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design. The population consisted of 76 tenth grade students, while the sample comprised 31 students from class X Merdeka 1, who were selected using purposive sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of 20 statements based on three indicators of speaking anxiety: communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by calculating the mean score with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics. The findings showed that the students’ English speaking anxiety was categorized as high, with an overall mean score of 3.55. Most students felt nervous when speaking English, were afraid of making mistakes, and worried about receiving negative evaluations from their teacher and classmates. Therefore, it can be concluded that the tenth grade students at SMAN 2 Tembilahan experienced a high level of English speaking anxiety.
