Abstract
Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of language learning, yet many students continue to struggle with it. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the research involved a purposively selected sample of 15 students from one class. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, combining closed and open-ended questions, and supported by documentation in the form of photographs and audio recordings. The findings revealed that students experienced challenges in four main areas: pronunciation, where differences between English and Indonesian phonological systems led to frequent mispronunciations, especially with words that are difficult to read; spelling, where confusion with double letters, silent letters, and inconsistencies between sounds and spellings resulted in frequent errors during dictation and writing; grammar, where students struggled to identify correct verb forms and construct simple sentences; and meaning, where students found it difficult to understand and retain vocabulary, particularly wordsthat are rarely used, and often relied on dictionaries, Google Translate, or assistance from teachers and peers. In conclusion, the study shows that students still face significant difficulties in mastering English vocabulary, highlighting the need for more effective strategies to improve their ability to pronounce, spell, use grammar correctly, and comprehend word meanings.
