Abstract
English speaking confidence is a critical component of students' academic achievement and personal development. However, many high school students continue to struggle with speaking English fluently due to anxiety and low self confidence. Among the various factors influencing speaking ability, peer support has been recognized as a potential contributor to enhancing students’ confidence by fostering a supportive and nonjudgmental learning environment. This research aimed to determine the correlation between peer support and English speaking confidence among eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Tembilahan Hulu. Employing a correlational research design, data were collected from 98 students through questionnaires to measure both peer support and English speaking confidence using Likert scales. The results, analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment formula, revealed a correlation coefficient of r = 0,356 which is greater than the critical values at both the 5% (0,195) and 1% (0,256) significance levels. It indicates a low but significant positive correlation between the two variables. Accordingly, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected. Descriptive analysis further showed that the majority of students reported a high level of peer support, while their level of English speaking confidence is at a medium level. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between peer support and English speaking confidence among students at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Tembilahan Hulu. These findings suggest that although peer support contributes positively to students’ speaking confidence, the relatively low strength of the correlation implies the presence of other influencing factors. Therefore, teachers should consider a more holistic approach to fostering English speaking confidence by addressing additional psychological and contextual elements alongside peer support.
