Abstract

Speaking is a process of conveying or expressing ideas, thoughts, feelings, and information from one person to another, while self-efficacy refers to an individual's beliefs about their ability to carry out tasks entrusted to them. The problem in speaking is how students can speak fluently and confidently. Some students can do it fluently and confidently, but not all can. This research aims to determine the correlation between students` self-efficacy and their speaking skill at English Study Program Islamic University of Indragiri. In this study, the researchers used a correlational research design. The population in this research was 2nd semester students, English Study Program, Islamic University of Indragiri, with a total of 19 students. The sample was selected using a total sampling technique consisting of 19 students. The research instruments were student self-efficacy questionnaires and speaking tests to collect data. After the data was collected, the average self-efficacy of students was included in the moderate category, with an mean score of 65.6 in the range of 40-79. Meanwhile, the average speaking skills of students were included in the good category, with an mean score of 67.6 in the range of 61-80. To know the correlation between those variables, the researchers analyzed the data using SPSS 20 for Windows. The researchers analyzed the students` self-efficacy and their speaking skills by using the Pearson Product Moment formula. The researcher got r observed 0.152 is smaller than r table 0.497 and 0.623. It means that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is rejected. Based on the coefficient correlation, 0.152 was interpreted as a very low correlation. It can be concluded that there is no significant correlation between students` self-efficacy and their speaking skill at English Study Program Islamic University of Indragiri.
