Abstract
This study aims to examine the slang terms used in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. By analyzing the results of the study, the researcher put forward five types of slang used by the characters in the novel: fresh and creative, clipping, imitative, flippant, and acronym. The design of this study is descriptive and qualitative with a focus on the frequency of occurrence of each type of slang. In terms of percentage, flippant slang dominates with 33.75% (27 occurrences), which indicates a tendency to use language that expresses indifference or insult. Then, the type of fresh and creative language reaches 31.25% (25 occurrences), which indicates the innovation and originality of the character's language, clipping slang occurs in 22.50% (18 occurrences), reflecting the effectiveness and familiarity of the spoken dialogue. Imitative slang occurs in 12.50% (10 occurrences), capturing the nuances of authentic voice and speech patterns. It is interesting to note that acronym slang is not found at all (0%) in the novel, implying that this form of slang is not relevant or not yet common in the context and time of the novel. The study concludes that flippant slang is the most common type of slang in The Great Gatsby, while acronym slang is the least common. The use of slang in the novel is heavily influenced by word choice, character background, and setting, which collectively contribute to creating a rich and authentic social and psychological nuance.
