Abstract
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT has significantly impacted higher education, particularly in academic writing. While these tools offer assistance in brainstorming, paraphrasing, and organizing ideas, over-reliance without understanding their ethical limitations can threaten academic integrity and students' critical thinking. This research aimed to discover the English Study Program students' awareness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in learning academic writing. This study employed a quantitative research design using a survey method. The data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 15 statements distributed to a sample of 55 students from the 4th, 6th, and 8th semesters at the Islamic University of Indragiri. The questionnaire measured five indicators of awareness: exposure, attention, memory awareness, language awareness, and executive awareness. The findings revealed that the students generally have a high level of awareness regarding AI usage in academic writing. Based on the descriptive statistics, students scored well across all categories with an overall mean score of 3.90, which falls into the "High Awareness" classification. Specifically, Executive Awareness received the highest mean score (4.09), followed by Language Awareness (4.08), Attention (3.92), Memory Awareness (3.73), and Exposure (3.67). In conclusion, the students are sufficiently aware of how AI works, its ethical implications, and its limitations as an assisting tool rather than a shortcut in their academic writing process.
