Abstract
This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to low student interest in learning English among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Tembilahan Hulu. This study also aims to identify the internal factors influencing low interest in learning English and to determine the most dominant factor. The method used in this study is quantitative descriptive. The study population consisted of 164 eighthgrade students, while the sample comprised 45 students selected using proportional random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire containing 16 valid statements based on four indicators: motivation, attitude toward learning English, self-confidence, and vocabulary mastery. The research data were analyzed using percentage calculations. The results showed that the percentage for the motivation factor was 61.6% (Moderate), attitude 58.6% (Moderate), self-confidence 68.4% (High), and vocabulary mastery 66.4% (High). The overall average percentage of 63.8% falls into the moderate category. Among these four factors, self-confidence had the highest percentage at 68.4%, followed by vocabulary mastery (66.4%), motivation (61.6%), and attitude (58.6%).
