Abstract

This research analyzes the use of idiomatic expressions in the novel Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. The study aims to identify the types of idioms and determine the most dominant type used in the novel. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the data were collected through close reading of the novel. The identified idioms were then classified based on Hoar and Siahaan’s (2023:171) framework adapted from Christopher (2021) theory into seven categories: pure idioms, binomial idioms, partial idioms, prepositional idioms, proverbs, euphemisms, and clichés. The analysis revealed 70 idiomatic expressions. The findings show that cliché idioms are the most dominant type, with 22 occurrences (31.43%), followed by pure idioms (15 occurrences, 21.43%), and prepositional idioms (12 occurrences, 17.14%). Partial idioms accounted for 14.29% (10 occurrences), euphemisms for 10.00% (7 occurrences), and proverbs for 5.71% (4 occurrences). A significant finding is the complete absence of binomial idioms (0%) in the data. The study concludes that the high frequency of cliché, pure, and prepositional idioms is crucial for building the novel's humorous, satirical, and colloquial tone. This distinct distribution reflects the authors' specific stylistic preferences in employing figurative language. This research is expected to be beneficial for literature students, teachers, and readers in enhancing their understanding and appreciation of idiomatic expressions in narrative fiction.
